Mrs. Susan Mertz

Mrs. Mertz is a 5th grade teacher who is currently teaching science and social studies for the 2023-2024 school year.   She graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas in December of 1987 with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in reading.  This is her 35th year in the classroom working with elementary students.  Mrs. Mertz began her career at Aldine ISD in Houston, Texas, teaching 1st, 3rd,and 4th grades and was a Skills Specialist and Testing Coordinator her last 7 years at Aldine on two elementary campuses, before moving with her family to the Hill Country 20 years ago.  She is married to her husband of 35 years, Brice Mertz, who is also a teacher at Champion High School in Boerne ISD. They have two children who have been a part of the Boerne school system.  Their son, Jacob, graduated from Boerne High in 2008 and has been married to his wife, Liza, for 5 years and they have a beautiful daughter, Emma, who turned one year old this year. Their daughter, Elle, graduated from Boerne High School in 2021 and is now attending the University of Texas in Austin and majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business and will graduate in the spring of 2024. 

Mrs. Mertz always knew she wanted to be a teacher since she was a young girl.  She has had several teachers from first grade through college who had a positive impact on her life and she always wanted to have the same impact, if not more, on each student that entered her classroom.  Mrs. Mertz believes being able to be a part of her students' academic lives, as well as being able to witness the growth from August to May of each child, is such a special privilege to be a part of.  She continues to love what she does and feels blessed to serve the Boerne community each and every day. Mrs. Mertz looks forward to many more years of being a part of Boerne ISD.
