Mrs. Olson

Howdy Chargers!!!

My name is Keli Olson and I am thrilled to be your Health Science teacher this year!  I will be teaching Principles of Health Science (PHS) and Health Science Theory for the 2022-2023 school year and am so excited for us to dive into the medical world!

My journey in healthcare first began when I enlisted as a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect, but knew that I had a passion for helping people and trusted that the rest would fall into place….and it sure did! After the Navy, I continued my medical studies and graduated as a nurse from Galen College of Nursing. I have since worked in various healthcare settings, but felt most “at home” in Pediatric Home Healthcare (no pun intended!). To this day, I still occasionally work weekend shifts. But, I also have a fascination for history, which prompted me to return to school yet again and graduate with my Bachelor of Science in History from Liberty University in 2020. I love to learn, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I find myself back in school for something else within the next few years….the sky’s the limit, after all!

In 2016, I made the transition from full-time Home Healthcare to School Nursing. It was then that I confirmed the yearning in my heart to work more closely with students and combine my passion for medicine with my love for education. At that moment, I knew that I belonged in the classroom, teaching the subject I treasure with the students I was entrusted to (as Victor Rios once said, “teach to the heart, and the mind will follow”). That quote has been my guiding pillar!

Each day when you enter my class, I hope that you will think of yourself as a healthcare professional, because that’s exactly what you are! After just one day of class, you will have more knowledge than someone who has never participated in a medical course – and knowledge is power!  But just be sure to remember, “with great power comes great responsibility!” Such will be the case in this class: I want you to be able to enter the world prepared, confident, and EAGER to help someone in need! That doesn’t come without some hard work, practice, and fun!

A few “fun” facts about me….I grew up in Maryland (and a few short years in Germany) before moving to Texas in 2011. I married my husband James in 2012 and we have a funny, loving, sweet nine year old son, Colton. We are also starting our own personal zoo that consists of three dogs (Blue, Oreo, and Dakota), a guinea pig named Beep, a bearded dragon named Gilbert, and a leopard gecko named Dutch…..or at least it feels like a zoo to me sometimes, ha! I love anything related to the outdoors - kayaking, hiking, backpacking/camping, etc. – and I currently serve as an Ambassador for Texas State Parks! I am also a martial arts instructor and previous soccer coach for my son’s teams. I am active in my church and love to have coffee dates with friends or go on a random road trip to learn some Texas history!

It’s going to be a great year; “I feel it in my bones!”….and in my heart, lungs, brain, and phalanges (you’ll learn about those soon!)  I can't wait to get to know each of you and hear your stories (I am a big fan of our “Charger Chats”)! Please ask questions any time – no question is a silly question! Goooooo Chargers!!!

P.S.) Yes, laughter is the best medicine!

Some things we will learn this year:

This will be an exciting year of learning about the physical and mental components required to make our bodies whole and healthy! We will provide an overview of therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services and biotechnology research and development systems of the healthcare industry. Some of our lessons include the history of medicine, disease prevention and pathology, human development/anatomy and physiology, cultural awareness, nutrition, first aid and CPR, and much more!
