Hall of Honor

Erik Halgunseth was a record-setting basketball player for the Boerne Greyhounds, earning numerous national, state, regional and district accolades during his high school career, including an Honorable Mention on the USA Today All-American team. As a Greyhound, Halgunseth was named to two All-State teams. 1st Team, by the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) and the 2nd Team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC). He also received 1st Team All-Region honors from the TABC, along with 1st Team All-District and a spot on the San Antonio Express-News 1st Team.

Halgunseth's talent earned him selections to prestigious all-star games, including the McDonald's Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) All-Star Game, the South Texas All-Star Game, and the Nemo Herrera All-Star Game.

He set several school records, including most points in a season (1,056), most free throws made in a season (241) and the highest free throw percentage (82%). In his senior year, Erik averaged an impressive 31.7 points per game.

After graduating from Boerne High School in 1995, Halgunseth continued his basketball career at Concordia University and Texas Lutheran University where he was a two-time All-Conference selection. He was also named the Heart of Texas Conference Freshman of the Year while at Concordia.

Halgunseth went on to play 12 years professionally in Mexico's Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, winning two championships and earning All-Star honors.

Erik now resides in San Antonio with his wife, Daniela. He has three children and is a licensed professional counselor working full-time for Methodist Healthcare. He runs a private counseling practice.

The 2008 & 2009 Champion Chargers Boys Cross Country Team achieved remarkable success, earning back-to-back state championships and capping off their dominance with a victory at the 2009 Nike National Championships.

The Chargers clinched the 1009 Nike National title by narrowly defeating a strong team from Spokane, Washington, by a margin of six points (195-201).

In their consecutive state championship seasons, the Chargers dominated the competition, winning by an astounding margin of over 140 points.

In addition to their state and national titles, the Chargers swept their District and Regional Championships, further solidifying their places as two of the most successful teams in school history.

These victories marked a significant moment in Champion High School's athletic history, as the Chargers became the first team in the school's history to win a state championship.

The teams were led by Coach Dave Fulkerson, a 2016 inductee into the Boerne ISD Hall of Honor. Fulkerson guided Boerne ISD teams to state championships in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. He also earned a high school state cross country championship while coaching in Hawaii. Erin Bradley served as the assistant coach during each of Boerne ISD's eight cross country titles. Bradley was also the assistant with Jon Tate during the 2019 and 2020 seasons when they also earned state titles.

Members of the historic 2008 and 2009 teams include John Hernandez, Colby McCune, Nathan Christianson, Ethan Doherty, Ryan Miller, Will Mack, Moses Luevano, and Travis Barclay.

Nathan Christianson also won the 2009 State Cross Country Individual Championship and went on to win the gold medal in the boys 3200 meter run in 2010. Ethan Doherty earned back-to-back state titles in the 1600 meter run in 2009 and 2010, and Travis Barclay won the 1600-meter title in 2011.

Kristen Schramek Bates was a standout volleyball player for the Boerne Greyhounds where she was a four-year starter and served as team captain during her junior and senior seasons. 

Throughout her high school career, Shramek Bates earned numerous state, regional and district honors. In here senior year, she was named 1st Team All-State and 1st Team Academic All-State. She also earned Academic All-District honors all four years of high school. Over the course of her career, she was recognized as 1st Team All-District, and 2nd Team All-City by the San Antonio Express-News. She also earned the title of Newcomer of the Year.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Schramek Bates excelled off the court as well. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Habitat for Humanity, and other organizations. She graduated from Boerne High School in 2003.

Schramek Bates earned a volleyball scholarship to Baylor University, where she continued to shine. In 2006, she led the team with 485 digs, ranking third on Baylor's single-season record list and solidifying her position as the career leader in digs per game. 

Academically, Shramek Bates was equally impressive, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and later earning a Master of Science in Sports Management. She was a four-time All-Academic Big 12 First Team honoree and regularly appeared on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Currently, Shramek Bates serves as the Assistant Director of Academic Advising at the University of Incarnate Word, where she recently helped post the highest GPA on record in the Spring of 2024.
