District Raises Awareness for Students with Food Allergies

Be a Pal With this new school year, BISD implemented an updated Food Allergy Management Plan to help safeguard students with food allergies.

Boerne ISD’s School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), an appointed advisory group of individuals made up of parents, community members, school staff and students, championed the topic of food allergies at the end of the last school year with awareness as a cornerstone to their efforts. National statistics show that 1 in 13 children have food allergies or roughly two in every classroom. Studies have also shown that children with food allergies are twice as likely to be bullied, in comparison to children without the medical condition.

This information provided a clear platform for our SHAC Food Allergy Committee to focus on creating greater awareness surrounding food allergies. In conjunction with FARE- Food Allergy Research & Education, BISD is presenting the Be A Pal food allergy education program. A cohesive SHAC Food Allergy Awareness Spirit Day is taking place simultaneously at all BISD elementary schools including Van Raub, Fair Oaks, Kendall, Cibolo Creek, Fabra and Currington on Monday, September 24th,2018, as was announced at the end of year School Board meeting last school year.

At the very core of this Be A Pal program is a message of kindness, inclusion, and diversity. The students will learn the introductory facts about what an allergic reaction is; when it’s appropriate to get an adult for help; and how to really “Be A Pal” to help and not tease the kids that live with food allergies.

The students that live with food allergies should feel safe and supported at school and this education will have a ripple effect far beyond the classroom walls. Join BISD in starting the conversation about how to “Be A Pal: Protect a Life”.
