Champion Theatre Director Earns Broadway Scholarship

Aviles May 27, 2020- Boerne ISD is proud to announce that Champion High School Theatre Director Israel Aviles has been awarded a full scholarship to attend the Broadway Teaching Group’s Broadway Teacher Workshop. The honor was announced during the virtual Joci Awards ceremony.

Aviles was chosen by the Las Casas Foundation, as one of two scholarship recipients from the field of theatre directors teaching in the Greater San Antonio area and South Texas High schools.

Normally, the scholarship includes a two-week trip to New York to work on Broadway with prominent Broadway actors, directors and producers. However, due to the ongoing, pandemic, the summer conference has been moved to a virtual format this year.

The Broadway Theater Workshop offers a vastly expanded schedule of workshops, fireside chats with Broadway legends including Billy Porter, Patti Lupone, and Chita Rivera, and new opportunities for networking with peers, all while focused on teaching the arts remotely. The workshops will cover general areas of theatre education: Design, Direction, Choreography, Curriculum Development, Musical Theatre Performance, Music Direction and Producing, with the goal of arming educators with methods, content, and pedagogy to be prepared for any further disruptions of daily classroom routine.

Boerne ISD extends our congratulations to Israel Aviles on earning this prestigious honor.
