Boerne ISD Students, Teachers Earn VFW Scholarships

December 2, 2020- The Boerne Independent School District announced that three students and two teachers have earned scholarships from the VFW contest winners VFW Post 688. The students were awarded scholarships for their winning essays in the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contests, while the teachers earned Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year honors. 

In the annual contests, students are tasked with writing or recording Patriotic essays that speak to their core beliefs about our democracy, while teachers are selected as Teachers of the year for teaching students about our rich history, traditions, and the role of our veterans in creating and shaping America.

The Boerne ISD winners are as follows: 

1st Place in the Patriot's Pen Contest and a $100 scholarship, from Boerne Middle School North, Katie Kunkle. 

3rd Place in the Patriot’s Pen Contest and a $50 scholarship, from Voss Middle School, Colin Quinn.

1st Place in the Voice of Democracy Contest and a $200 scholarship, from Boerne High School, Tucker Rouse. 

3rd Place in the Voice of Democracy Contest and a $100 scholarship, from Champion High School, Jordan Smajstrla.

The Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year for Elementary School and a $500 award, from Curington, Crystal Atteberry. 

The Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year for High School and a $500 award, from Champion, Major Steve Laughery.
