Boerne ISD Names 2021 Teacher and Support Staff of the Year

March 22, 2021- Boerne ISD, along with Toyota of Boerne and United Texas Credit Union, is proud to announce the 2021 Teacher and Support Staff of the year winners. The District Teacher of the Year is Susan Mertz from Dr. Ferdinand L. Herff Elementary School, while the District Support Staff of the Year is Jose Bercian from Curington Elementary School. The winners were announced at the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees Meeting Monday night.

“In this challenging pandemic year, we are extremely proud of all of our staff and want to thank them for making this a great year for our students,” said Boerne ISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Price. “We are especially proud of Susan and Jose, and are tremendously appreciative of all their hard work. They work tirelessly every day to go above and beyond for our students. To earn recognition as teacher and support staff of the year is a fantastic honor, and it is very well deserved. Susan and Jose set a great example for their peers, as well as our students. We are very happy for them and their families,” Price stated.

District Teacher of the Year Susan Mertz, who received a $10,000 check from Toyota of Boerne, as well as a $1,000 stipend from Boerne ISD as District Teacher of the Year, has been an educator for 32 years, and has been with Boerne ISD since 2004. She currently teaches fifth-grade at Herff Elementary School. Mrs. Mertz’ husband Brice is also an educator at Boerne ISD.

The 11 other campus teachers of the year will receive $500 cash from Toyota of Boerne, as well as a $1,000 stipend from Boerne ISD.

District Support Staff of the Year Jose Berican, who received a $1,500 check from United Texas Credit Union (UTCU), has been with Boerne ISD for over 10 years. He started at Boerne Middle School South before becoming a Custodian at Curington Elementary. Berican can be seen greeting students as they arrive for school, and volunteers to read to students in various classes throughout the school day. 

The 11 other campus support staff of the year will receive a $500 stipend from Boerne ISD.
