Hall of HonorOctober 15, 2021- The Boerne Independent School District inducted the Athletic Hall of Honor Class of 2021 on Friday in a luncheon at Tapatio Springs. This year’s inductees are the 2006 State Champion Boerne High School Soccer Team, with the individual inductees being Blake Smith, Adam Comer, and Jennifer Standefer, as well as Kerry Barboza earning the Bill Canavan Memorial Benefactor Award.

“We are extremely proud of this year’s Athletic Hall of Honor inductees, as they are an extraordinary group,” said Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech. “The inductees not only excelled in their sport, but serve as fantastic role models for the younger generation. We could not be more excited to welcome the class of 2021 into the Hall of Honor. It is truly well-deserved,” said Leech.

The 2006 Boerne High School Soccer team is one of the most successful teams in Boerne history, having won the Class 4-A State Championship that season. Coached by David Rogers, the Greyhounds went 25-2-2 during the memorable 2006 campaign, winning the District, Bi-District and Regional Championships, before beating Mount Pleasant and Wichita Falls by identical 1-0 scores to earn the state crown. Of their 25 victories that season, 16 were shutouts.

Smith, a 2009 Boerne-Champion graduate and soccer standout, was named to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) All-Century Soccer First-Team in 2010. As a freshman, Smith was a member of the 2006 Boerne High School State Champion Soccer Team. In 2009, Smith led Champion to the Regional Finals in their inaugural season, racking up 31 goals and 21 assists.

From 2012-2020 Smith played professionally, including parts of four seasons in the MLS with the Montreal Impact and FC Cincinnati. Smith retired from professional soccer in 2020. He is a 2012 graduate of the University of New Mexico.

Comer won the 1998 Class 4-A Track and Field 800 meter state championship for the Boerne Greyhounds. Comer, who was named the San Antonio Express-News Runner of the Year that season, won the state crown by finishing the race in an impressive 1:54.76. Comer was a member of the 1996 and 1997 Greyhound Cross Country Team, which qualified for the state meet in both years.

Comer, a 1998 graduate of Boerne High School, earned a scholarship to Stephen F. Austin University, and currently serves as the Aquatic Education Regional Coordinator for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Standefer was a two-sport athlete in Cross Country and Track and Field for the Boerne Greyhounds. She qualified for state in the 800 meters, 1600 meters, 3200 meters, and 4x400 meter relay. She is the only Boerne ISD track athlete in history to qualify in the 800, 1600 and 3200 races. In 1988 Standefer earned a State Silver Medal in the 3200, and in 1989 earned a Bronze in the 800.

Standefer is a 1990 graduate of Boerne High School and went on to run collegiately at The University of Houston. Her main track event while at Houston was the 1500 meters. Standefer was a Track and Field Coach at Vail Christian High School in Colorado, before recently moving to Florida.

Kerry Barboza is the recipient of the Bill Canavan Memorial Benefactor Award. Mr. Barboza has served the Boerne community for nearly 20 years as the Sports Editor for the Boerne Star.
