Boerne ISD Staff, Students Earn VFW Awards

VFWNovember 19, 2021- A total of eight Boerne ISD Students and Staff have been selected to receive awards from the VFW Post 688. Three students won awards in the Patriots Pen Essay Contest, while three earned accolades in the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest, and two Teachers earned Citizenship Teacher Awards. 

In the Patriots Pen Essay Contest, Boerne Middle School North 7th-Graders Jackson Olivo and Addison Schuepback tied for first place and will each receive a $100 scholarship, while Voss Middle School 6th-Grader Evan Rafferty took third place and earned a $50 scholarship. The students wrote their 300-400 word essays on the theme “How Can I Be A Good American?” All three of the winners at the local Post level will advance to District 13 competition.

In the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest, Boerne High School Sophomores swept all three awards, with Clarissa Musquiz winning first place and a $200 scholarship, Luke Fox took second and earned a $150 scholarship, and Keira Luevano placed third and won a $100 scholarship. The students recorded their three-to-five minute essays on the theme “America:  Where Do We Go From Here?”  The 1st Place winner, Clarissa Muzquiz, will advance to District 13 competition.

Two teachers earned Citizenship Teacher Awards, with Voss Middle School’s Dustin Lazenby winning the Middle School Division, and Curington Elementary’s Lindsey Hendrix taking the title in the Elementary School Division. Both Lazenby and Hendrix won a $500 prize and will advance to District 13 competition.
