Boerne ISD Staff, Students Earn VFW Awards

VFWNovember 30, 2022- A total of eight Boerne ISD Students and Staff have been selected to receive awards from Boerne’s VFW Post 688. Three students won awards in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, while three earned accolades in the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest, and two Teachers earned Citizenship Teacher Awards. 

 

In the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, Boerne Middle School South claimed both first and second place, with 6th grader Meredith Greer York taking first and receiving a $200 scholarship, and 7th grader Carter D. Calaway claimed second and received a $150 scholarship, while Boerne Middle School North 6th-Grader Charlie Bowden took third place and earned a $100 scholarship. The students wrote their essays on the theme “My Pledge to our Veterans”

 

In the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest, Boerne High School juniors swept all three awards, with Madeleine Goodrich winning first place and a $400 scholarship, Katherine Louise Fonza took second and earned a $300 scholarship, and Keira Luevano placed third and won a $200 scholarship. The students recorded their essays on the theme “Why is the Veteran Important?”  

 

Goodrich’s audio essay also earned first place at the VFW District 13 competition, which earned her an additional $750 scholarship. 

 

Two teachers earned Citizenship Teacher Awards, with Boerne Middle School South’s Joe “Pepe” Garcia winning the Middle School Division, and Herff Elementary’s Andria Burton taking the title in the Elementary School Division. Both Garcia and Burton won a $500 prize.

 

The winners will be presented with their scholarships by Boerne’s VFW Post 688 at the December 12th Boerne ISD Board of Trustees meeting.
