Boerne ISD Names Blane Ellis Champion Head Football Coach

EllisDecember 13, 2022- The Boerne Independent School District named current Champion High School Defensive Coordinator Blane Ellis as the school’s new Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator. The announcement was made at the BISD Board of Trustees Monthly Meeting on Monday.

“We are extremely excited to name Blane Ellis as the next Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator at Champion High School,” Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech said. “Coach Ellis has been an integral part of the success of the Chargers Football program over the past 10 seasons. The players know and respect him, and he has great relationships with all our coaches at Champion, not just the football coaches. Coach Ellis will continue to help build on the success that Champion has had in its rich history. He is the right person for the job and we couldn’t be happier,” said Leech.

Ellis, who has been the Chargers Defensive Coordinator for the past 10 seasons, has helped guide Champion to a record of 83-35 during that span, including advancing to the UIL Class 5A State Semifinals in the 2019 season. The Chargers have made the playoffs in eight of 10 seasons with Ellis as the Defensive Coordinator and earned 12 playoff wins in that time. During Ellis' tenure with the Chargers, they have averaged over eight wins per season, while winning two district championships and advancing to the State Semifinals (2019), Regional Semifinals (2015), and Area Finals (2014, 2020, 2021). Ellis has helped coach Champion teams to win 10 or more games in three seasons (11 wins in 2014, 10 wins in 2016, and 13 wins in 2019).

Ellis has also served as the Champion Track and Field Coach since 2014. The Chargers have won a district championship in at least one division every year during his tenure. The Boys and Girls Teams won the 2021 and 2022 District Championship, with the Boys Team earning the 2021 Regional Championship. In all, over the past two Track and Field seasons Champion has had a total of 36 state qualifiers winning five medals.

Prior to coming to Champion, Ellis was an Assistant Football and Baseball Coach at Marshall High School in San Antonio.
