November 13, 2023- The Boerne Education Foundation awarded $196,386.82 in Teacher Innovation Grants to educators across all Boerne ISD schools. In all, 93 grants were funded, with staff members surprised with the news of their grant on Thursday, November 9th, with a big check presented to each of the teachers in their classroom.
Teachers completed an online application at the beginning of the school year and the grants are awarded before Thanksgiving with the intent of having the grant-in-action in the classroom by January. The grants are reviewed and awarded by committee members of the Boerne Education Foundation board. The grants enable teachers to purchase innovative classroom tools to promote teaching through critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
“When we support our schools and teachers, we are investing in the lives of our children, the prosperity of our community, and the well-being of future generations,” said Josh Peterson, BEF Vice President of Disbursements.
Boerne and Champion High School led the way with 20 grants each, while Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary received 13 grants.
The remaining grants by school were: Boerne Middle School South (7), Kendall Elementary (6), Voss Middle School (5), Herff Elementary (5), Boerne Middle School North (4), Curington Elementary (4), Fabra Elementary (4), Van Raub Elementary (4), and Cibolo Creek Elementary (1).
A highlight of the surprise grant announcements was during Friday’s Veterans Day Ceremony. JROTC Instructor and retired United States Air Force Col. Michael Colvard was surprised with the news that he was awarded $20,568 for his grant, Aviation Flight Simulator Trainer and CyberPatriot Competition Stations benefitting Boerne High School and Champion High School. Col. Colvard’s grant is the largest single annual Teacher Innovation Grant BEF has ever awarded. The teacher innovation grants are in addition to the BEF annual fall campus disbursement.
