Boerne Outdoor Academy
The Boerne Outdoor Academy (BOA) is a program created by parents, teachers, and outdoor educators to enrich and extend the classroom learning of Boerne Independent School District fifth graders. It began in 1997 with one campus and 75 students, and has expanded to include 700+ fifth grade students from eight BISD elementary campuses. BOA programming features outdoor inquiry, experience-based learning, and interpersonal skills-development through group learning, living, and recreation in the idyllic Hill Country setting of Hermann Sons Life Camp in Comfort, TX.
The Boerne Outdoor Academy exists to nurture our youth’s commitment to themselves, their community, and their environment.
Why is BOA needed?
In many ways, educating our children has never been more important. The world is changing rapidly. The information our children need to learn is expanding. The challenges of our society are becoming more diverse. In order to succeed in the future, our children will need to know how to approach the unknown with curiosity and confidence, how to work with a variety of people, and how to apply their knowledge in responsible ways. The BOA program is designed to help develop these skills.
Children who have wonderful memories of the outdoors develop a lifelong enthusiasm and respect for the natural world. Those who explore outside the four walls of the traditional classroom develop a desire to continue learning throughout the rest of their lives.
