Teaching Philosophy
This course is an introduction to chemistry. Chemistry helps explain the fundamental interactions of matter.

Classroom Management
› Golden Rule—treat others as you would like others to treat you. This helps keep our classroom environment respectful, and positive.
› Follow all classroom routines, procedures, and instructions. We are in a potentially dangerous laboratory environment, not following the rules of our classroom may put you or other students at risk of injury. Always keep safety a top-priority and follow instructions and rules from the Flinn Safety Contract.
› Conduct yourself in accordance with the BISD Student Handbook & Code of Conduct. District wide policies will be enforced at all times in my classroom. Bullying—office referral. Cheating—office referral. You get the point. Familiarize yourself with the BISD student handbook because you will be held accountable for any violations.
› Adhere to our classroom’s Social Contract.

Grading Policy
During each nine-week grading cycle, grades will be weighted 50% Major grades and 50% Minor grades with the following number of grades and type:
› ≥ 2 Major Assignments – tests, labs, projects, formal presentations*
› ≥ 7 Minor Assignments – daily assignments, group work, homework, labs, and quizzes*
*The examples under either Major or Minor, include, but are not limited to the above. Labs may be either Major or Minor grades.
Grades recorded on progress reports and report cards will be numerical averages utilizing a 0–100 scale.
› A – Excellent: 90 – 100
› B – Above Average: 80 – 89
› C – Average: 70 – 79
› F – Failure: 69 – 0
Semester 1 Average = (CY1 Average x 42.5%) + (CY2 Average x 42.5%) + (Semester 1 Exam x 15%)
Semester 2 Average = (CY3 Average x 42.5%) + (CY4 Average x 42.5%) + (Semester 2 Exam x 15%)
Final Average for the the course = (Semester 1 Average x 50%) + (Semester 2 Average x 50%)
If your Final Average is ≥ 70, then one full unit of credit will be earned for the course.
Class Work
Class assignments are posted on Google Classroom. If you are absent from class, check Google Classroom to see what you missed and then work proactively to complete anything you missed.
Late Work
Late work is any assignment not turned in by the announced due date, time, and method. After late work is graded for completeness and correctness, the following late work penalty shall be deducted:
› 30% deduction for late work turned in within 1 class rotation from the original due date and time,
› 50% deduction for late work turned in after 1 class rotation, but within 2 class rotations from the original due date and time, or
› 100% deduction, resulting in zero credit, for late work turned in after 2 class rotations from the original due date and time.
Failing grades due to applying a late work penalty do not constitute a need for reteaching or reassessing.
Make-up Work for Absences
Make-up work is any work missed due to being absent from this class. Whenever you are absent, it is your responsibility to determine what work you missed while you were absent. Check Google Classroom and follow up with me.
All make-up work shall be due based on how many days you were absent. For each class you are absent, upon your return, you have the same number of class days to 2 of 3 Syllabus – Chemistry turn in make-up work for full credit. All make-up work turned in after this due date, shall be treated as late work (see Late Work).
Reassessing
Reassessing may be provided when a grade of 69 or less is earned on any Major grade, except semester exam, or failure due to applying a late work penalty.
Each reassessment is limited to one attempt for a maximum score of 70, but during a given nine-week grading cycle (e.g., CY1), you are limited to no more than two reassessments. Additionally, reassessing must meet the following criteria:
› prior to any reassessment, you must attend at least one tutorial session or complete recommended remedial activities, and
› all reassessments shall be completed within seven calendar days after grades are posted on Skyward or communicated to you.
Academic Honesty: Students caught copying or cheating on any assignment will receive a zero for that grade. Student may be referred to campus principal.
Cell phones & Electronic Equipment
Cell phones will be turned off before entering my class and placed in your backpack. This includes ear buds. If I see it you will be given a warning to put it up. If you continue to disregard cell phone policy you will be asked to place your electronic device on my desk until the end of class. If you refuse you will be referred to your principal. This includes smart watches if you are texting on them also.
Tardies
I will follow the student handbook policy for tardies.
Do NOT come into class, set your things down, then ask to go to the
bathroom…do that before you come to class, please.
Other Information
- All notes, work and handouts should be kept in the binder.
- Major projects and extra credit will be assigned throughout the semester.
- Pop quizzes could occur over notes and vocabulary.
- Keep this paper in the binder or at home for reference.
- Contact me if I can answer any questions. I will do my best to assist you.
- Special circumstances will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
